Once upon a time…

One bright morning, Dino Dan stood on the tallest rock in Fern Valley, took the biggest breath of his whole life, and opened his mouth wide. "Rooooar!" he said. That is what he meant to say. "Squeeek," said his mouth. It was a tiny, high, wobbly sound, like a rusty hinge on a very small door.

The volcano giggled, and a little puff of smoke came out of the top. The ferns giggled, and their leaves shook. Even the eggs in the nest giggled, and they rocked from side to side. Dan's cheeks turned bright red. He tried again. "Rooooar!" "Squeeek!" Now the whole valley was laughing, and Dan wanted to disappear.

Dan stomped off, cheeks hot, tail dragging in the dirt. Being a dinosaur with a squeak is very hard work. He sat down by the river all alone and tried a few more times, very quietly, when nobody could hear. Every time it came out the same. "I'm a dinosaur," he sighed. "Dinosaurs are supposed to roar."

But then Dan noticed something. A tiny egg had rolled away from the nest and was wobbling by the river's edge, and a big, dark shadow was creeping closer and closer. It was a hungry old swamp beast, sniffing the air. Dan tried to shout a warning, but nobody could hear a roar over the howling wind.
