Rex and the Time-Travel Sandwich
Once upon a time…
The pickle was the suspicious part. Rex knew that now, standing in the middle of a bubbling, steaming swamp, holding half a sandwich in each hand. It had looked like a perfectly ordinary lunch, ham and cheese on rye, with one extra-shiny pickle on top. But nothing about the past forty seconds had been ordinary, and Rex was beginning to suspect the pickle.

One bite had taken him back sixty-six million years. There were giant ferns, and a purple sky, and a smell like wet socks. A very large shadow blocked the sun, and Rex looked up, and up, and up. It was the biggest animal he had ever seen. It was also holding a very small napkin, which somehow made it worse.

"Hello," said the shadow, in a voice like a friendly avalanche. It lowered a head the size of a bus, and Rex saw a pair of kind, curious eyes. It turned out to be a Brachiosaurus named Gladys. "Sorry to bother you," she said politely. "I couldn't help noticing. Is that ham? I haven't had ham in ages."

Gladys was friendly, but the rest of the herd was not. There were three Allosaurus circling the edge of the swamp, licking their lips and eyeing Rex's sandwich. Rex gulped. He had half a sandwich, a very good chance of becoming lunch himself, and no idea how to get home. He needed a plan, and he needed a second bite.
