Once upon a time…

Early one morning, before the sun was even up, the farmyard was as quiet as a mouse. Then, from behind the barn, came a sound. Cluck-a-cluck, cluck-a-cluck, cluck-a-cluck. It was Henrietta and her hens, and they had arrived first. They had set up their drums in a big circle and were tapping out a merry beat.

Then came a low, rumbly, wonderful sound. Moo-boo-boo, moo-boo-boo. It was the cows, and they had brought the bass, a big wooden thing taller than the barn door. The cows swayed from side to side in time with the drums, their big brown eyes closed, their tails swishing. Moo-boo-boo. The whole barn was starting to bounce.

Neigh-hey-hey, went the horse on the fiddle, tapping one hoof on the ground. His bow flew up and down, and the tune he played was as fast as a galloping pony. The ducks began to quack along, and the goats began to clap. Faster and faster the music went, until even the barn cat woke up and started to tap her paw.

Then the pig stepped forward with his triangle. He lifted it high and gave it a mighty whack. DING! Everyone jumped, and the chickens flapped, and a cow dropped her bass. "Too loud?" asked the pig, looking worried. "Just right," said the rooster, wiping his beak with his wing. "Do it again!" So the pig did: DING! DING!
