Once upon a time…
Junie had been looking forward to the Big Bones Museum sleepover for ninety-two days. She had counted, crossing each one off on her kitchen calendar with a red marker. She packed a sleeping bag, a flashlight, three pairs of socks, a roll of sticky tape, and a very serious notebook labeled DINOSAUR FACTS. She was more than ready.

The guide, Mr. Okonkwo, led thirty sleepy kids into the great hall, where the ceiling was as high as a cathedral. "Lights out at nine," he said. "Please don't touch the exhibits. And please don't wander off. The museum gets... lively after midnight." He winked one eye, and a few of the kids giggled nervously. Junie did not giggle. She wrote it down.

Junie unrolled her sleeping bag under the biggest skeleton in the hall: Roberta the Tyrannosaurus rex. Her skull was as big as a wheelbarrow, and her teeth were the size of bananas. Her tiny arms hung down in front of her ribs like a pair of question marks. Junie looked up at her and loved her already.

As she settled in, Junie's flashlight caught something small on the floor under a bench. It was a bone, about as long as her thumb, gray and knobbly. She scooped it up to hand to Mr. Okonkwo, but just then he called lights out, and the whole hall went dark, so she tucked it into her pajama pocket for safekeeping.
