Once upon a time…
The research submarine Halcyon sank slowly into the dark. Marina Vale pressed her forehead to the cold window of the tiny cabin and watched the last of the sunlight fade from blue to black, and then from black to something even blacker. She was twelve, and it was her first dive below one thousand meters. Her stomach fluttered, and she loved it.

"Depth: one thousand five hundred meters," said her mother, Dr. Inés Vale, tapping the console. "Sunlight ends around two hundred. Down here, the only light is the kind that animals make themselves." Marina held her breath. The submarine hummed softly all around them, and beyond the glass was the most beautiful dark she had ever seen. She wanted to remember it forever.

Outside, tiny lights drifted by like slow, green snowflakes. A jellyfish pulsed blue, then vanished. A fish with a lantern dangling from its head swam right up to the glass, blinked its glowing bait at Marina, and looked deeply unimpressed, as if she were the strange one and it were the tourist. Marina laughed out loud. Her laugh sounded huge in the little cabin.

"Bioluminescence," said her mother. "Nearly everything down here makes its own light: to hunt, to hide, to signal each other. It's the most common language on Earth, and we barely understand it. Nobody knows what most of it means yet." Marina wrote that in her notebook and underlined the word yet, twice, until the pencil nearly tore the page.
